Jacob Greaves is set to undergo a medical at Ipswich Town as talks with Jaden Philogene continue over a £35m deal

Ipswich Town have made a significant transfer breakthrough as they agreed a deal for Hull City centre-back Jacob Greaves.

As first reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, the 23-year-old Tigers star will undergo a medical with the Suffolk team before finalising his contract for his highly anticipated move to the Premier League.

The Tractor Boys are in talks over a double deal with Greaves’ mercurial teammate Jaden Philogene, which would be worth £35m plus add-ons, but negotiations for the winger are ongoing, although it is likely that an agreement will be reached in the near future.

Crystal Palace are keen on Philogene and could theoretically pip the Premier League newcomers, but as talks continue, Greaves is the closest prospect to a transfer to Portman Road.

Greaves has been a Premier League player in waiting for some time, having come through the Tigers’ academy ranks since childhood.

The outstanding player’s first season in senior football came in 2019/20 with then League Two side Cheltenham Town, where he made 35 appearances over the course of the season before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. This laid the foundation for his return to East Yorkshire, where he played a key role in Hull’s campaign for promotion to League One.

Greaves made 143 appearances in the English second tier over the Tigers’ last three seasons in the Championship. The 2023/24 season was a milestone for him as he was not only named the club’s Player of the Year but was also named in the Championship team of the season as a true sign of his remarkable performances.

While Liam Rosenior failed to lead Hull to the play-off places and subsequent promotion, Greaves will move up to the top flight and Ipswich are expected to win the battle for his services.

Kieran McKenna relied largely on the Luke Woolfenden-Cameron Burgess partnership for his Ipswich team last season, but he is about to invest a significant amount of money in the services of Greaves.

Of course, Greaves is not the only player Ipswich wants. Jaden Philogene is also currently negotiating a move to Portman Road.

However, Ornstein reports that while the deal is still likely to be a double transfer, Town have not yet been able to completely rip off the sensitive attacker as negotiations over his move are still ongoing.

Crystal Palace is also said to be interested in the 22-year-old former Aston Villa player. Since Crystal Palace now has a lot of money after the transfer of Michael Olise to FC Bayern Munich, there is a real possibility that Oliver Glasner’s team will thwart the club’s plans.

Hull City will struggle to adequately replace Jacob Greaves

Jacob Greaves

Even though Hull will receive a large transfer fee for Greaves’ services, it will be difficult to replace a player who is arguably the best centre-back in the Championship.

Left-footed, confident on the ball and dominant in the air, Greaves is well deserved to be promoted to the Premier League but is joining a team that is one of the relegation favourites, so he has his work cut out for him.

Hull now need to find a suitable player to replace Greaves and that is easier said than done.

However, Tim Walter will have the necessary funds and since Acun Ilicali is a generous owner, a talented player is expected to arrive at the MKM Stadium. However, the shoes he will have to fill will be huge.
