Christina Applegate worried about Will Ferrell’s marriage during “Anchorman”

Not Ron Burgundy!

Christina Applegate was concerned about the state of Will Ferrell’s marriage to Viveca Paulin while they were filming “Anchorman” in 2004.

In Tuesday’s episode of Applegate’s podcast “MeSsy,” the former co-stars looked back on the misunderstanding.

“Christina, remember when you thought I was having marital problems?” asked Ferrell, 56.

“When we were shooting the movie, we went out a lot,” he recalled to Applegate, 52. “We would all go out as a group, like on weekends or something, to get something to eat. And I thought, oh great, let’s do it! And then Viveca kept having to cancel. You said it later. I could see that you were thinking, ‘What’s going on? His wife isn’t coming anymore.'”

Ferrell, who married his wife four years before “Anchorman” was released, said Viveca was “not doing well” because she was pregnant with their eldest son, Magnus, at the time.

“In the middle of filming, we were finally able to announce that she was pregnant,” he explained, reminding Applegate: “You thought, ‘I knew something was going on!'”

“It just occurred to me,” Applegate said. “I remember you two had something else you hadn’t talked about. A pregnancy.”

The “Dead to Me” actress praised Ferrell and Paulin, 55, and said they are “a dream couple in the whole world.”

She also noted how “incredible” it is that her other “Anchorman” co-stars, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, are both still married to their respective wives.

After Applegate complimented Ferrell’s spouse, the “Succession” producer shared that the couple will celebrate their 24th wedding anniversary next month.

“We’ve known each other since, say, the summer of 1991,” he said. “It’s one of those stories: When we first met, we both thought, wait a minute, I really like this person. But it was too much, too fast, too young. The intensity was like, oh, whoa.”

“We were just friends, we were kind of together, but then we were just friends for five years and then we kind of got back together,” the “Barbie” actor added.

Ferrell told Elle in 2012 that he was dating someone else when he met Paulin.

“I was in another relationship,” he said, “and Viv and I talked like friends for two hours, and it felt like five minutes, and then my girlfriend called, and after 15 minutes I thought, ‘My God, it’s really late here on the East Coast. I should get some sleep.’ To me, Viv was the one who got away.”

The Despicable Me 4 star recalled knowing he was going to marry Paulin after she invited him out for a beer during his break from Saturday Night Live.

“What I love most about Viv is simple. She totally understood my sense of humor,” Ferrell told the outlet. “I sent her flowers every day for a week and a card that said, ‘You’re the fifth most beautiful woman in the office.’ She loved it. We had a shortcut.”

Ferrell and Paulin have three sons: Magnus, 20, Mattias, 17, and Axel, 14.
