From Italy: Agent offers Manchester City defender with 154 appearances to Champions League duo at reduced price

Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo has been offered to two Serie A clubs by his agent Jorge Mendes.

The 30-year-old, who was eliminated from the European Championship with Portugal on Friday after a penalty shootout defeat to France in the quarter-finals, is expected to sort out his future at Manchester City in the coming weeks.

Cancelo spent successive loan spells at Bayern Munich and Barcelona after leaving Manchester City in dramatic fashion in January 2023 following a row with manager Pep Guardiola at the training ground – less than 12 months after signing a long-term contract extension at the Etihad.

The full-back, who has won seven trophies and made over 150 appearances for Manchester City, made 32 appearances in La Liga and ten in the Champions League for Barcelona in the most recent 2023/24 season, being directly involved in goals on nine occasions.

The Portugal international made 23 appearances before surprisingly leaving the Sky Blues midway through the 2023 season, and despite featuring in Manchester City’s pre-season last year, the 30-year-old is not considered to be part of Guardiola’s first-team plans for the 2024/25 season.

Barcelona’s efforts to re-sign the full-back have been hampered by the Catalan club’s financial situation, with Etihad bosses looking to cash in on the defender this summer while Manchester City are trying to raise transfer funds.

The defender’s agent has reportedly offered a reduced deal to two Serie A clubs to bring Cancelo from east Manchester on a permanent basis, with Manchester City setting a lower asking price of €25 million despite paying £60 million for the 30-year-old in 2019.

The 30-year-old is reportedly willing to reduce his salary to “ease” his return to the Italian top flight and play Champions League football next season, having previously made 51 appearances in Serie A.

Saudi Arabian clubs are also said to be interested in signing the full-back this summer; Premier League rival Arsenal had previously been linked with a possible purchase at a bargain price.

If there is no clarity about the player’s future for the 2024/25 season, Cancelo could travel with Manchester City to the USA for a four-game pre-season tour later this month.
