Cooling stations open despite power outage and extreme heat

As Hurricane Beryl left millions of Houstonians without power, a heat warning was issued for the region on Tuesday. Temperatures will fall below 30 degrees throughout the week. The heat index, or the perceived temperature combined with humidity, is expected to reach as high as 41 degrees.

The hot temperatures combined with high humidity create a dangerous situation for many Houston residents, even those without air conditioning. The elderly and young children are especially vulnerable in the heat.

Some general tips for dealing with heat include drinking plenty of water, wearing loose and light-colored clothing, and wearing hats and sunscreen.

Symptoms of heat-related illness include dizziness, confusion, nausea, excessive sweating, and even loss of consciousness. In the event of a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
