FARGO, ND – The Sioux City Explorers (24-28) failed to defeat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (32-21) on Tuesday night, losing the second game of the four-game series 8-3. The X’s took an early lead, but the RedHawks quickly recovered and never let up.

The Explorers started the scoring in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Sioux City’s last man in candidate Osvaldo Martinez against Fargo’s last man in candidate Tyler Grauer, giving the X’s a 1-0 lead.

With two outs in the second inning, a hit-by-pitch and a RedHawks single put runners on the corners. Sioux City catcher Jake Ortega tried to catch Kona Quiggle on a snap throw to first base, but the ball sailed down the line, allowing Fargo’s Chiu to score and sending Quiggle to third base on a tie. After that, Fargo’s Sam Dexter hit a single against Sioux City starter Braunny Munoz, sending Quiggle home and putting the RedHawks ahead 2-1. Fargo’s Evan Alexander kept the two-out rally alive in the next at-bat, hitting a double and sending Dexter around to extend the lead to 3-1. The RedHawks upped the ante on the next plate appearance when Fargo’s Ismael Alcantara hit an RBI single against Sioux City’s Munoz, bringing in Alexander and making it 4-1.

The RedHawks extended their lead after several scoreless innings in the bottom of the fifth when Peter Brookshaw hit an RBI single against Sioux City’s Munoz, sending home Evan Alexander and extending their lead to 5-1.

The RedHawks scored another run in the sixth inning when Fargo’s Marcus Chiu led off with a double before being driven home by a Dexter sacrifice fly by Sioux City’s Munoz to make the score 6-1.

The X’s began to cut the deficit in the seventh inning, starting with an RBI single by Sioux City’s Scott Ota off Fargo relief pitcher Kolby Kiser that sent Chase Harris home and made it 6-2. The Explorers cut the lead to 6-3 afterward when Sioux City’s John Nogowski hit an RBI single off Fargo relief pitcher Garrett Alexander, bringing in Daniel Lingua.

The RedHawks responded in the seventh inning when Fargo’s Brookshaw hit an RBI single against new Sioux City relief pitcher Jeremy Goins, sending Alcantara home and extending the RedHawks’ lead to 7-3. Later in the inning, Fargo’s Chiu pushed the game up to 8-3 by smacking Peter Brookshaw on an RBI double against Sioux City’s Goins.

From then on, neither team was able to score. Sioux City was able to pitch a perfect eighth inning thanks to reliever Santiago Florez, but was defeated by Fargo’s Alexander and closer Alex DuBord, who sealed the victory for the RedHawks.
