West Coast stars support Alex Winwood ahead of World Championship fight

Alex Winwood can count on plenty of support in his historic fight for the world title, as west coast stars such as Harley Reid met the “Rock” of Bunbury.

When he faces WBA mini-super champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong at Perth’s HBF Stadium on Saturday 7 September, Winwood will be aiming to break boxing legend Jeff Fenech’s record and become the fastest Australian to win a professional world title.

He has won four fights in a row since turning pro and a fifth victory would surpass Fenech’s mark when he won the bantamweight title in his seventh fight in 1985.

Winwood was described by boxing star Danny Green as a “talent of a generation”, a term also attributed to rising star Harley Reid even before his signing.

“He’s a gifted puncher. The size of the boy, if he was my weight he would knock down houses,” Green told The West Australian last year.

He wasn’t the only Eagle in attendance; Tyler Brockman and Liam Ryan were also there to take photos with Winwood, who was named the 2024 NAIDOC National Sportsperson of the Year.

This is the second martial arts specialist Reid has met in a matter of weeks, after UFC fighter Steve Erceg made a surprise visit to the Eagles’ training last Tuesday.
