Bryce Dallas Howard explains why father Ron Howard proposed to his wife Cheryl three times

Bryce Dallas Howard has revealed why her father Ron Howard had to propose three times to his wife Cheryl Howard, with whom he was married for almost 50 years.

The 42-year-old actress spoke openly about her mother and father’s relationship during an episode of The Drew Barrymore Showwhich aired on February 5. Speaking to Drew, Bryce explained that although her parents met at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, California, they did not get married right away.

In fact, after the Argyll Star, Cheryl turned down her partner’s first two marriage proposals to focus on her education.

“Even though they had an incredible relationship in high school and all that, he proposed to her three times and she said no twice,” Byrce explained. “Because she was like, ‘I want to go to school first. I’m not ready to jump on your bandwagon yet.'”

Elsewhere in the interview, Bryce described her childhood and mentioned how long her parents have been together.

“I grew up very, very, very, very, very sheltered. And it’s really my mother, my mother and father have been together since she was 16,” she said. “And she’s a force of nature.”

Bryce then described some of the things her mother had accomplished when she was younger, such as her “first solo flight at 16.”

“When there were no girls’ sports at her school, she cut her hair and told everyone her name was Charlie and she played football. And when they found out, she started a track team. She is a very, very, very tough, distinctive, unique woman,” she added. “She’s a writer. She writes esoteric science fiction.”

She went on to describe some of her mother’s best qualities and then described how Cheryl shaped Ron into the person he is today.

“She’s just so unapologetically herself and I think she raised my dad that way in some ways,” Bryce added. “Because they’ve been together since they were 16 and she’s just kept him so honest and so authentic.”

The Happy Days The star and his wife married in 1975 and have been together ever since. In addition to Bryce, the couple has three other adult children: 42-year-old twin daughters Jocelyn Carlyle and Paige Carlyle, and 36-year-old son Reed Cross.

Over the years, Ron has also spoken openly about his nearly 50-year marriage. In an interview with People In 2019, he explained that he and his now-wife had an instant connection when he met her in high school. “I met her and there was never anyone else,” he explained.

He then revealed the secret to his wife’s long-lasting marriage: “communication.” He also explained that there is no particular “technique” for how he and Cheryl make their relationship work.

“There is no tactic other than communication that is really important. You have to learn to communicate and have difficult conversations in a constructive way,” he said. “There is also an element of luck involved, because people either grow together or they don’t, and I don’t think you can force that.”
