Seek shelter: Special weather advisory issued for the Minneapolis area

MINNEAPOLIS — The National Weather Service has issued a “special weather advisory” for Minneapolis, St. Paul and the nearby northern suburbs. At about 2:20 p.m., NWS Doppler radar tracked an area of ​​thunderstorms near Interstate 94 over the northern metro, moving south at 20 mph.

Residents must expect wind gusts of up to 80 km/h, which could break off branches and blow over unsecured objects.

“If you are outdoors, seek shelter inside a building,” the NWS said. “This storm will also produce torrential rain, which may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.”

Potentially affected locations include Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Cloud, Buffalo, Brooklyn Park, Plymouth, Woodbury, Maple Grove, Coon Rapids, Blaine, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park.

This area includes the following motorways:

  • Interstate 35 between mile markers 130 and 132.
  • Interstate 94 in Minnesota between mile markers 145 and 205.
  • US Highway 10 in Minnesota between mile markers 179 and 217.
  • US Highway 12 between mile markers 89 and 140.
  • US Highway 169 between mile markers 159 and 172.
  • US Highway 8 in Minnesota between mile markers 0 and 1.
