News from Tornos | Greek Parliament approves modernization of the Academy of Athens

The Greek parliament on Wednesday approved by a large majority a bill from the Ministry of Education, Religion and Sports to update the organization of the Academy of Athens, reports ANA.

The ruling New Democracy, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, PASOK-Movement for Change (KINAL), Elliniki Lysi, New Left and the Spartiates supported the bill in principle. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) voted “present”, while Niki and Plefsi Eleftherias voted against. The unusual consensus of most parties in parliament was particularly highlighted by Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis.

Pierrakakis also referred to the adopted amendment, which provides for the creation of 1,723 permanent teaching positions in primary education and 1,555 positions in special education. The bill provides for the abolition of an equal number of positions in secondary education. In particular, he stressed that “all parties agree to reduce the number of temporary positions in favor of permanent positions. Although the parties estimate that we will fill three to four thousand positions this year, we are implementing approximately ten thousand.”
