Trump ally calls Kamala Harris “colored” and triggers backlash

Conservative journalist Sebastian Gorka, who briefly worked in Donald Trump’s administration, drew heavy criticism from social media users on Wednesday when he called Vice President Kamala Harris “colored.”

During a recent appearance on Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt tonightSchmitt asked Gorka, who previously served as Trump’s deputy assistant in 2017, “Do these donors really believe that Kamala Harris will do better in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania than Joe Biden?”

Schmitt was referring to recent calls by some Democrats for President Joe Biden to abandon his re-election campaign after his disappointing performance in the debate against former President Donald Trump in Atlanta last month and let another Democrat like Harris run as the party’s nominee.

“Rob, you’re thinking logically. Stop it,” Gorka jokingly told Schmitt on Tuesday night. “She’s a DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) employee, right? She’s a woman! She’s of color. Therefore, she must be good,” Gorka said sarcastically.

Newsweek has emailed Gorka and Harris’ press secretary for comment.

Harris is the first female vice president in American history. She is also the first black and first Asian American vice president. She served as a U.S. Senator for California from 2017 to 2021 and ran against Biden before becoming his running mate in 2020. Before her time in Congress, she served as California’s attorney general for six years and before that as San Francisco’s district attorney.

On social media, people reacted with outrage to Gorka’s comments about Harris, calling them “racist.”

Ed Krassenstein, a political commentator who rose to notoriety for trolling Trump on social media, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “The madman and apparently racist Sebastian Gorka just called Kamala Harris a ‘woman of color.’ Have some of these people just given up hiding their racism?”

Keith Boykin, a political commentator and author who previously served as an adviser in Bill Clinton’s administration, Posted: “Former Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka says Democrats are only supporting Vice President Kamala Harris because ‘she was hired by DEI,’ ‘she’s a woman,’ and ‘she’s a woman of color.’ From the racists who brought you an unqualified TV game show host and now a convicted felon.”

Trump, the star of the reality show The Apprentice before entering politics, is now a convicted felon after being found guilty in late May on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election. Daniels claims she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, which he denies. The former president maintains his innocence and claims the case is politically motivated against him. His legal team intends to appeal the verdict.

Victoria Brownworth, an investigative journalist, wrote: “Oops. Last night on NEWSMAX, Sebastian Gorka said of Vice President Kamala Harris, ‘She’s colored, right?'”

“This is the most blatant racism I’ve ever seen on TV. Gorka just called Kamala Harris a ‘DEI employee’ and said ‘she’s of color,'” another X user wrote.

As companies try to become more inclusive in their hiring practices and other corporate initiatives, some conservatives not only criticize these practices but accuse people of color or other workers with different skin tones of not having earned their roles but of being hired as a token of their diversity.
