42nd Cherries for Charity event starts – InForum

FARGO — Starting Wednesday, July 10, you can donate to charity while shopping at your local grocery store. It’s the 42nd annual Cherries for Charity event.

Hornbacher’s is partnering with the YWCA of Cass-Clay and the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center on the event.

For every pound of cherries sold, 25 cents will be donated to the two organizations through Tuesday, July 16.

Since its launch in 1982, the fundraiser has raised over $517,000, the equivalent of 1.8 million pounds of cherries.

Jill DeVries, development manager at the YWCA, said: “We help women and children rebuild their lives after tragedy or abuse and violence. Our goal is to first provide them with protection and then get them into housing, because they must not have to return to their abuser.”

Event organizers say these donations will make it possible to help survivors in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

“We are very fortunate to have the support of our community, not just today, but every day of the year because we are open 365 days a year,” DeVries said. “People knock on our door every day to escape abuse and violence, so this is really important.”

The RACC is the only crisis center in the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. The YWCA is the largest emergency shelter in North Dakota.
