Obituary for James “Jim” Franklin Coble 2024 – Hayworth

James Franklin Coble, 71, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 2, just 5 days before his birthday. Jim was a son of North Carolina and spent his formative years in Winston-Salem. Although he eventually earned his doctorate in Kentucky, his heart belonged to ECU. Jim worked as a professor of geology at Tidewater Community College for 30 years. He was well-liked by his students both as an instructor and as a mentor to the geology club. The times he spent with the students in the geology club were the happiest days of his professional life, and even 7 years after his retirement from Virginia State, many students still call him a friend.

Jim married late in life to his long-time girlfriend and partner, Patty McGuire. After spending 40 years together, they finally tied the knot this year. Throughout their relationship, they shared pets. A beloved pet was Charlie the cat, whom Jim adored. Jim never considered himself a cat person until Charlie came along. Jim also loved Willie the golden retriever, and Willie considered Jim his “Uncle Jim.” Jim and Patty have both been caring for their elderly parents for the past 5 years, and Jim lost his father earlier this year.

Jim leaves behind his beloved wife, Patty, who will continue to reside in Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2024, in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers or cards, Jim requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of his mother, who died of the disease on Mother’s Day nearly 10 years ago.
