Murder charge against Palm Bay man accused of shooting his father

A son suspected of shooting his father last week after a drunken argument at a Palm Bay home made his first court appearance Wednesday.

Brandon Michael Cain, 23, was charged with first-degree premeditated murder after Palm Bay police investigated the July 3 shooting death of 52-year-old Daniel Cain Jr., records show. Cain, who was arrested Tuesday, remains in the Brevard County Jail without bail.

It was one of two murders in Palm Bay in less than a week in which a son or daughter was suspected of taking the life of a parent.

Shortly after midnight, officers arrived at a home in the 1300 block of Danbury Street after a man called to say he had shot his father, who was lying unconscious in the front yard. Police and paramedics arrived a short time later and took the elder Cain to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The younger Cain, who was also hospitalized with chest pains, told police he shot his father in self-defense after an argument between the two, police reports show.

Earlier this week, detectives found video footage documenting the shooting. Daniel Cain was sitting outside the home when his son stepped out the front door, pulled out his gun and put it behind his back, records show. The two are seen arguing in the video before the younger Cain approached his father.

Daniel Cain stood up and stumbled as his son pointed his gun at his father and fired several shots at him, who fell back. Brandon Cain raised his gun again and fired several more shots at his bleeding father.

A hearing date has not yet been set.
