This powerful Sauvignon Blanc for is full of fruit and spice

A soft, digestible Grüner Veltliner from Austria and a bold, spicy Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand are the highlights of this week’s wines. We also have an intriguing, unusual red wine from the prolific Italian winery Piccini.

Frenzy Sauvignon Blanc Mount Richmond Estate 2023

Marlborough, New Zealand, $16

Classic kiwi flavor – lime, lemongrass and jalapeño pepper spice up a passion fruit core. This wine is not for shy or introverted people. Alcohol content: 12.5%. Weight: 460 grams (light).

Imported by Wilson Daniels. Distributed locally by Breakthru Beverage Group.

Great value for money

Piccini Memoro Rosso

This is an unusual wine – it is not terroir-driven, as the grapes come from Puglia, Abruzzo, Sicily and Veneto, all of Italy. And the non-vintage blend of Primitivo, Montepulciano, Nero d’Avola and Merlot does not conform to any traditional convention of how wine should be made. But the combination works, producing a hearty, velvety wine that somehow combines fresh and dried fruit flavors into a harmonious whole, wrapped in a soft texture that refuses to quit. Bravo. Alcohol content: 14 percent. Weight: 630 grams (heavy).

Imported by Winesellers. Distributed locally by Winebow.

Pfaffl Grüner Veltliner from the house 2022

This was the “house wine” on my last flight with Austrian Airlines to Vienna, and it’s no wonder: it has the character of white flowers and peppery spices like Grüner, with a round, semi-dry finish. Alcohol content: 12.5 percent. Weight: 420 grams (light).

Imported from Palm Bay. Distributed locally by RNDC.

★ Good: The wine does what it promises and at a fair price. If it says Chardonnay on the label, it also tastes like Chardonnay.

★★ Excellent: A wine with character and something special. The first sip will raise your eyebrows.

★★★ Exceptional: An exciting wine that stands out from others in its class. Exciting and stunningly good.

★★★★ Sublime: Otherworldly. You might be thinking, “So this is what they were talking about.”
