Bethune is named Rookie of the Month for the third year in a row

Washington, DC (07/11/2024) – Washington Spirit midfielder Croix Bethune has been named the NWSL Rookie of the Month presented by Ally for her performance during the June competition, the league announced today. Bethune became the first player in NWSL history to win the award in two consecutive months when she received the honor for May and is now the first player to win the award three times in a row.

Bethune continued the unprecedented start to her first professional season before the Olympic break, scoring another goal and an assist in June. Her goal on June 15 against San Diego was the second-half tying goal in front of a Spirit record crowd of nearly 20,000. The next weekend, she assisted a fellow rookie Courtney BrownThe game-deciding goal was scored away against NJ/NY Gotham FC.

Bethune was selected as the third player in this year’s NWSL Draft and has played in all 16 games this season. She played 1,318 of a possible 1,440 minutes and recorded five goals and nine assists to start the year. With 10 games left in the 2024 regular season, Bethune has wasted no time setting new league records. In the Spirit’s May 1 game against Chicago, Bethune recorded three assists, becoming the first rookie and only the fifth player in NWSL history to accomplish the feat in a single game. She also became the fastest player in league history to reach eight assists in the regular season, needing just 11 games to do so. With her next assist, Bethune will tie Tobin Heath2016 for most assists in a single regular season.

Bethune was recently named to the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) as an alternate for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. After being named to the senior national team for the first time in late May, Bethune will now travel to France with Team USA.

The NWSL Rookie of the Month presented by Ally award is chosen each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a group of writers who regularly cover the league, and the NWSL’s on-air commentating talent.
