Uriel Antuna moves from Cruz Azul to AEK Athens

Just a few days after rising star Rodrigo Huesca left his youth club and joined Danish team FC Copenhagen, his star colleague Uriel Antuna is also about to leave and move to Europe.

RÉCORD confirmed yesterday that the Mexican international is close to a move to the Greek capital and is ready to sign a contract with AEK Athens. If nothing changes, he will join his Mexican teammate Orbellín Pineda.

The article suggests that the two clubs have agreed on a $5 million deal and that Antuna’s former club Chivas will receive compensation for the deal.

The 26-year-old returns to Europe, where he previously played for Manchester City’s youth team and for a short time in the Netherlands with FC Groningen. Antuna has spent the last five years in his native Mexico, initially joining Chivas for $9 million before moving to Cruz Azul in the capital in 2021.

Antuna can play on both wings, but also in the number 10 position. In the 2023/24 season, he scored 13 goals in 36 games and provided 6 assists during this time.

His form last season warranted a call-up to Mexico’s Copa América squad, but he failed to make much of an impression as his country was eliminated from the competition in the group stage. In total, the Cruz Azul winger has made 64 appearances for El Trí, scoring 14 goals.

His new team, AEK Athens, finished second in the Greek Super League, two points behind eventual league winners PAOK Thessaloniki in a closely fought title race. Their league position means they will participate in the UEFA Europa League in the 2024/25 season.
