What is the Republican Party’s platform for 2024? – NBC4 Washington

The Republican National Committee on Monday released the party platform, which was adopted behind closed doors in the run-up to the Republican National Convention next week in Milwaukee.

The 16-page document provides limited details on many key issues and adopts former President Donald Trump’s position on abortion, opposing a federal ban and leaving the decision on limits to the states. The lack of language on a national ban for the first time in 40 years comes as the Republican nominee tries to appeal to swing voters by downplaying the issue.

What is the Republican Party’s platform for 2024?

The platform presents 20 “promises” that reflect Trump’s Truth social posts in their slogans and capital letters. In addition, Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” becomes the official slogan of the Republican Party.

They address immigration, the economy, energy, taxes and crime, but avoid mentioning the word “abortion” in any of the key points.

  19. SECURE OUR ELECTIONS, INCLUDING SAME-DAY VOTING, VOTER IDENTIFICATION, PAPER BALLOTS,
    AND PROOF OF NATIONALITY
  20. UNITE OUR COUNTRY BY TAKING IT TO NEW AND RECORD LEVELS

Some of these commitments are discussed in more detail later in the document, but details are lacking on how exactly these objectives will be achieved.

The RNC promises to “reverse” and “defeat” inflation, “unleash American energy,” reinstate Trump’s “deregulation policies,” “SEAL THE BORDER,” and “restore peace through strength” to bring prices down. It also reiterates Trump’s key campaign promises to make tax cuts permanent and eliminate taxes on tips to “BUILD THE GREATEST ECONOMY IN HISTORY.”

The focus on immigration is on the goals of “STOP THE MIGRANT INVASION,” reversing Trump’s travel ban and starting the “largest deportation program in American history” by strengthening ICE (domestic intelligence agency) and increasing penalties for illegal entry.

To combat crime, the platform calls for not only enforcing immigration laws but also deploying the U.S. Navy to enforce a “complete fentanyl blockade” and “put an end to the scourge of gang violence among illegal immigrants once and for all.”

The RNC also proposes the creation of a “GREAT IRON DOME MISSILE SHIELD OVER OUR ENTIRE COUNTRY,” a reference to Israel’s short-range missile defense system. A promise that would come at an astronomical cost and have minimal capacity to counter the kind of longer-range threats the U.S. faces.

Social issues are addressed on several levels. The program promises to defund schools that engage in “inappropriate political indoctrination” and critical race theory – something Trump has long opposed. Instead, it aims to defend the “right to prayer and Bible reading in school under the First Amendment to the Constitution.”

Republicans also want to put an end to the “left’s gender madness” by “keeping men out of women’s sports, banning taxpayer funding for gender reassignment surgeries, and preventing taxpayer-funded schools from promoting gender reassignment surgery.”

Notably, abortion is mentioned only once in the platform: “We will oppose late-term abortions while supporting mothers and policies that promote prenatal care, access to contraception, and IVF (fertility treatments),” the document states. This is in line with Trump’s rhetoric of leaving abortion laws to the states under the 14th Amendment.

The document reflects Trump’s promise not to cut Social Security and Medicare, breaking with long-held Republican stances on social services.

Climate change is not mentioned.

How the Republican platform for 2024 compares to 2020

According to an RNC resolution, the RNC did not release a new platform for the 2020 presidential election, but decided to keep the 2016 edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 2024 platform is 50 pages shorter than its predecessor, which was 66 pages long. It has changed Republican rhetoric on several fronts.

The platform’s watered-down stance on abortion has drawn criticism within the Republican Party. The 2016 and 2020 platforms endorsed a federal ban on abortion at 20 weeks of pregnancy, supported a “human life amendment” to the Constitution and promised to defund Planned Parenthood. The 2024 version simply states that the RNC “proudly stands up for families and life” and that states are “free to enact laws to protect those rights,” with no mention of a federal ban.

The principle of “traditional marriage and family” has also been replaced by a broader call to end “left-wing gender madness.” Rhetoric against same-sex marriage has also been replaced by opposition to transgender rights. The 2024 platform advocates “keeping men out of women’s sports” and “banning tax-funded schools from promoting gender reassignment.”

A stronger stance on religious practice has been taken. The new platform specifically mentions reading the Bible in schools, whereas the platforms from 2016 to 2020 merely affirmed the right of students to “pray voluntarily at public school events.”

The new program also deviates from previous Republican positions on trade and explicitly supports tariffs that would make it possible to “lower taxes for American workers, families and businesses.”

Although Trump reiterated his call for repealing the Affordable Care Act, the RNC appears to have dropped the idea, as Obamacare is not mentioned in the 16-page document. In 2016 and 2020, the RNC had written that “any honest agenda to improve health care must begin with repealing the dishonestly named Affordable Care Act.”

The old programs called for cuts and reforms to Medicare, including raising the eligibility age due to “today’s longer life expectancies.” The 2024 program also promises to protect Medicare from “financial depletion caused by the Democrats’ plan to add tens of millions of new illegal immigrants to the Medicare rolls.” A false claim, since illegal immigrants are not eligible to enroll in the government-funded health insurance plan.

The new program is, both stylistically and substantively, a sign of Trump’s growing influence on the Republicans.
