Big South announces site of Hercules Tires Big South Basketball Championships

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Big South Conference Council of Chief Executive Officers has announced the host site for the 2025 and 2026 Hercules Tires Big South Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. Johnson City, Tennessee, will be the host city for the championships, bringing the tournaments to the Mountain South and Freedom Hall Civic Center, it was announced today at a press conference. The facility will be the league’s sixth neutral site for its premier basketball events in the conference’s 40-year history. The agreement includes a mutual option for 2027.

“The Big South Conference is excited to partner with Johnson City to provide our basketball student-athletes with a premier and unforgettable championship experience in the Mountain South,” said Big South Commissioner Sherika A. Montgomery. “Johnson City officials made it clear that attracting a world-class sporting event is a priority. The Big South is confident that this partnership will produce highly competitive basketball programs while increasing brand awareness in this thriving region.”

Located an average of three hours from the Big South’s nine member institutions, Johnson City will be the first basketball championship site outside the conference’s traditional catchment area, allowing the league to continue hosting the combined tournaments it has held since 2022. The 2025 Hercules Tires Big South Basketball Championships are scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, March 5-9, at the 6,500-seat Freedom Hall.

“Today we celebrate teamwork and our tireless efforts to provide a positive and rewarding experience for all athletes and fans who travel to Johnson City for the Big South Basketball Championships,” said Brenda WhitsonManaging Director of Visit Johnson City.

“The Big South’s commitment to its student-athletes was immediately evident and strikingly similar to our devotion to Johnson City and its residents,” added Dr. Todd FowlerMayor of Johnson City.
